Pick-up 9. FC ZIPLINE’S JAMESON O’GRADY, “Oz, Ozzie,” BLM, Hunter Street

Ozzie and Hunter came to the line at 4:25 pm

F – Smack!

RR – Through the water splashing - into cover and got deep - out the far end and back in and out on the right then the left side - out back of the flyer guns and had an extended hunt - had to be handled to this bird.

LR – Swam right to the end of the water and out - established a hunt - worked down the shoreline to the left and got it!

Long – Into the water - drove the hill - up the middle - went right - all the way across right - back to the middle and down - heading to the flyer area - dog was picked up.



Double Handle 8. FC-AFC SEASIDE’S MOJO MOXY, “Boots,” BLF, Craig Crook

Boots and Craig came to the line at 4:10 pm

F – Out to the fall area and a quick turn and she got it!

RR – Out through the cover -  hunted left and right in and out of cover - got deep - she was handled to this bird.

LR – Out on the right end of the pond where she started a hunt - left and right and then into the water and she got it!

Long – Drove the hill on the left up to the top - came back down on the right - and was handled to this bird also.



7. FC-AFC KIRKWOOD’S ACE OF A HIGHER GRADE, “Deacon,” BLM, Mark Medford

Deacon and Mark came to the line at 3:57 pm

F – Quick recovery of his Flyer.

RR –  Into the cover of the fall area - he made a couple loops in the cover and dug out his bird.

LR – Along the front of the gunners and following the shoreline - he got in the channel and came out to scoop up his bird.

Long – Drove through the RR cover - up the hill wide right - hunted the top of the ridge briefly before coming back down to get his bird.



No-Bird 91. FC THE TIN MAN, “TOR,” BLM, Marcy Wright

Tor and Marcy came to the line at 3:55 pm, but they received a 2nd No-Bird 


2. FC SHOTGUN RIDER OF FAITH, “Tim,” BLM, JD Babb

Tim and JD came to the line at 3:42 pm

F – Nice line - he made quick work of this bird!

LR – Went up the middle - slowly turned left and eased his way along the shoreline around the end and out to grab his duck.

RR – Up the middle again - into the cover and got it!

Long – Up the middle - went left and around the tree - came back down to the bird

95. FC-AFC ESPRIT’S GRADE A PEARL, “Pearl,” BLF, Gary Metzger

Pearl and Gary came to the line at 3:31 pm

F – Made a few passes left and right under the arc - worked out right and to the bird.

RR – Into the cover on a good line - missed the bird and popped back out of the cover on the far end for a loop or 2 - then back into the cover and she got the bird.

LR – Up the middle - turned left and hunted her way to the backside of the pond and her bird.

Long – Right of the tree and through the shallows - through the cover of the RR and straight up the hill - at the top of the hill she started a hunt left and right - worked her way back down to the hold blind and then the bird.



94. FC VINWOOD’S CHARLIE, “Charlie,” BLM, Danny Farmer

Charlie and Danny came to the line at 3:20 pm

F – Straight to the bird!

RR – Came in from the left - jumped in the cover and was back out with his bird!

LR – Halfway up the hill he turned to drop back down and grab his bird.

Long – Up the hill - around the left side of the tree and moved right across the road - back over and he was on his bird!



Handle 93. AFC HIGH PEAK’S MVP, “Kobe,” BLM, Samantha Thompson

Kobe and Samantha came to the line at 3:05 pm

F – Out to the fall area and located the bird with a couple tight circles

RR – Nice splash in the pond and he went across the water and headed for the bird - into the cover - turned left and snagged his bird.

LR – Under the arc and moving left - he located the bird and got it!

Long – Came out of the water near the RR - he was handled to drive him up the hill using multiple whistles.



Handle 92. 3R’s SMOKE THERE’S FIRE, “Fire,” BLM, Ty Rorem

Fire and Ty came to the line at 2:51 pm

F – Up the hill - slight right turn and he got it!

RR –  Through the shallows - right line right of the trees to the end of the row - hunted deep behind the flyer guns - handled to this bird.

LR – Into the pond - got out early - ran in front of the blind - around the end and straight to the bird.

Long – Up the hill -crossed the road to the deep right - came back down and scooped up his bird.



No-Bird 91. FC THE TIN MAN, “TOR,” BLM, Marcy Wright

Tor and Marcy came to the line at 2:49 pm and had a No-Bird on their Flyer, they will be back after 5 running dogs.

88. FC-AFC OLLIE OOP, “Ollie,” BLF, Dave Smith

Ollie and Dave came to the line at 2:37 pm

F – A few quick circles right and she moved left to snag her bird!

RR – Into the cover and she quickly located the bird.

LR – Nice line across the pond and directly to the bird on this mark!

Long – A beautiful line to the area - just missed the bird and went left around the tree - then she took a loop right and back to the bird and got it.



87. FC-AFC DRY CREEKS TRU BLU, “Trudy,” BLF, Hunter Street

Trudy and Hunter came to the line at 2:23 pm

F – A couple tight circles and she was on the bird.

RR – Good job!

LR – Swam across the pond and arrived in a good spot to snatch up her bird.

Long – Out of the pond and climbed the hill along side the cover of the RR - she continued to climb and proceeded to make a few passes wide right and deep - her hunt pattern moved her further left and she got it!



85. FC-AFC RIMFIRES ONCE INNA BLUE MOON, “Blue,” BLM, Al Arthur

Blue and Al came to the line at 2:11 pm

F – Came in under the arc - moved right to get the bird.

RR –  Over the dam and into the water - up the hill and into cover - straight to his bird!

LR – Into the pond - swam to the shore - took a few steps left and scooped it up!

Long – Left of the tree - through the shallow - drove the hill staying left of the road - moved left of the tree - around the tree - crossed right deep of the bird, but came back down and got it!



Double Handle 84. FC-AFC VIEWMARK’S GENE GENE THE SHOOTIN’ MACHINE, “Colt,” BLM, Danny Farmer

Colt and Danny came to the line at 1:56 pm

F – Hunted deep and away from the bird - back to the fall area and got it!

RR – Over the levee and into the water -  in and out of cover - left the area and was handled back in for this bird.

LR – Over the levee and into the pond - took the right side with less swimming - rounded the corner and went left to hunt up his bird -  got it!

Long – Over the dam and into the water - a right angle up the hill - got to the blind - went left across the road and away from the bird - went around the tree and deep right up to the ridge - had to be handled to this bird.



83. FC JS’S GET YOUR RUSH ON, “Rush,” BLM, Craig Crook

Rush and Craig came to the line at 1:41 pm

F – Stayed dry and got his bird!

RR – Right of the tree - into the pond - in to the cover and out with the bird

LR – In to the pond on a good line and straight to the far shore - scooped it up & turned in one motion to come in!

Long – Over the dam - into the water - headed up the hill on a left angle up to the ridge deep and away from the bird - worked his way back right and got his bird.

82. NFC-2xCNFC TRULINE’S JUST FLOYD, “Floyd,” YLM, Amie Henninger

Floyd and Amie came to the line at 1:10 pm

F – Right to his bird on this one.

RR – Straight across to the cover - he jumped in, turned left and grabbed his bird quickly.

LR – Perfect line to his bird - very nice!

Long – Wonderful line to the bird - he drove the hill and got to the area of the fall - took a sharp right - just to give Amy a quick scare - then back over to scoop up his bird. Very good!



81. FC-AFC BAYOU TECHE PAINT THE BLACK, “Madduxx,” BLM, Jamie Woodson

Madduxx and Jamie came to the line at 1:02 pm

F – Got past his bird and had to work back to find it

RR – Went on the back side of the trees going out - rounded the corner - came back and missed it - he re-rounded the trees and came back and got it!

LR – Swam the pond straight to his bird!

Long – Excellent line to the fall area - missed and made a turn deep right and then back to the fall area and the bird.



Re-Run 72. FC REDGATE’S COALFIRED YETI, “Yeti,” BLF, Chris Ledford

Yeti and Chris came back to the line at 12:47 pm

F – Nice Job!

RR – In to cover - checked down and turned left and out - quickly back into the cover for his bird.

LR – Over the dam into the pond - swam straight to her bird.

Long – Excellent line up the hill - came in just a few feet left of the bird and missed it - extended hunt deep but she worked it out and got it.

Jodie and Jake came to the line at 12:34 pm

F – Straight up the hillside - a quick right and she was on the bird.

RR – Across the water and into the cover - she made a couple passes and found her bird.

LR – Skimming along the shoreline area - and she came up with her bird.

Long – Coming up the hillside along the patch of cover that was hiding the RR bird - she drove on a bit more and then turned to descend toward the LR bird and she had to be handled to this bird.

77. FC DOCHENO’S WINNING COLOURS, “Lukas,” BLF, Marcy Wright

Lukas and Marcy came to the line at 12:21 pm

F – Coming in under the arc - easy turn and she scooped it up!

LR – Landed on the far shore and drove up the middle - took a left and moved into the rushes to find her bird.

RR – Across the pond, land in the middle she began to drive - turned right and dove into cover to get her bird.

Long – Squared up the hill - she found the holding blind and worked the area a bit - moved left and was onto the bird.



75. NAFC-FC BAYOU-STAR FLEURTY GIRL, “Fleurt,” BLF, Hunter Street

Fleurt and Hunter came to the line at 12:09 pm

F – Smack!

RR – Under the arc - came in from the back side and she got it!

LR – Went right of the fall - skimmed the blind and took a left on the far side and readjusted - got it!

Long – Excellent line out - came straight to the cover - turned back right - recrossed the road and got it!



Handle 74. FC-AFC FLAWLESS EXECUTION - FLEX, “Flex,” BLM, Johnny Armstrong

Flex and Johnny came to the line at 11:56 am

F – Straight to the bird!

RR – Into the cover and back out wide left to circle around and back into the cover - got it!

LR – Over the dam and into the pond - going wide left heading away from the fall - handled back to the bird.

Long – Over the right side of the dam into the pond - drove up the middle of the field and turned left - straight to his bird!



Double Handle 73. FC BEN’S POPPY LEE, “Poppy,” BLF, Jim Beck

Poppy and Jim came to the line at 11:43 am

F – Nice bird!

Long – Across the pond and she drove the hill coming in between the RR and the Long birds - she started to hunt deep and then worked her way down and got the Long bird.

LR – Out across the pond and she arrived wide left of the mark - she drove the hill and needed to be handled to this bird.

RR – Great line to the area - but she drove beyond the fall area and was handled back to this bird.

Luna and Danny came back to the line at 11:27 am for their Re-Run

F – Hunted behind the guns - back to the fall area and got her bird.

RR – Out to the pond and over the levee - through the cover - out of the cover and then back in again - she got it!

LR – Came in from the right and quickly got her bird!

Long – Out over the levee - a big splash into the pond - up the right side of the field - cut left at the blind and up to the top of the hill - back down the hill and to the bird. Got it!



Double Handle 71. FC WESTBAY’S NEXT OF KIN, “Briar,” BLM, Tony Flowers

Briar and Tony came to the line at 11:15 am

F – Took a right line out - turned left across towards the guns - a quick right and he was on the bird.

RR – Headed back toward the flyer on a more left line - and he was handled to the RR bird.

LR – Out over the levee - swam on a right line headed deep - turned left and went left to grab his bird.

Long – Came out of the pond heading right - he was handled left and out to the bird.



70. FC-AFC HEARTBEAT’S SWEET GEORGIA PEACH QA2, “Peaches,” BLF, Andrew Curtis

Peaches and Andrew came to the line at 11:06 am

F – Nice job!

RR – Good line across the pond toward the bird - jumped right into the cover for a couple loops - out to get a quick breath and back into the cover to pull out the bird!

LR – Arrived right of the gunners - she looked right and then back left to grab up her bird.

Long – Andy worked with her, waiting to get her lined up just right - she went out and drove the hill - curved around the tree - got deep but came back in for the bird.




68. FC TEKA’S HONKER HUNK-A-LOU QA2, “Louie,” YLM, Ty Rorem

Louie and Ty came to the line at 10:47 am

F – Coming in under the arc - had a brief look and he moved right to grab up his bird.

RR – Ty waited for Louie to lock in on his mark - then he was launched! Out across the pond and into the fall area - he popped out and jumped back into the cover to find his bird.

LR – Nice line across the field - had a brief look around the shoreline and then he located his bird.

Long – Good angle into the pond - drove the hill - crossed the road and came in for the bird.



Re-Run 61. FC-AFC EXECUTION SOUTHERN STYLE - LETHAL, “Lethal,” BLM, Jason Baker

Lethal and Jason came back to the line at 10:36 am

F – Came in from the left for his bird - got it!

RR – Into the water and then drove into the cover - out on the left - 2 more times back in and out and then he got it!

LR – Over the dam - into the pond - out just right of the bird - ran left and then scooped it up!

Long – Into the pond - drove the hill - took a left at the tree - circled the tree and then he found his bird.



Handle 67. FC-AFC WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN QA2, “Wilma,” CLF, Mark Huffman

Wilma and Mark came to the line at 10:19 am

F – Took the small water on the way to her bird! Nice!

RR – Right of the tree - into the water - up the hill and into the cover and the bird! No hunt, just a scoop and go!

LR – Over the dam - into the pond - swam on a left angle - out and then back right and to the bird.

Long – Over the dam - into the pond - a great line - left of the tree - went out of sight - was handled across the field and to the bird.

The wind is beginning to gust more strongly and is coming more from the west. The clouds are striated across the sky reducing the scorch of the Texas sunshine! Hang on to your hats folks! It's warm and getting windy.

Ryan and Lauren came to the line at 9:53 am

F – Came in under the arc of the bird - a quick right and she was on the bird.

RR – Right of the tree, through the shoreline cover and drove the far shore to work the fall area and back with her bird.

LR – Right to the bird!

Long – Across the water and up the hill - made a couple loops around the blind  - she drove a little further up the hill and over to get her bird.



Handle Re-Run 46. FC-AFC CROCS MINNEAPOLIS MIRACLE, “Diggs,” BLM, Jim Beck

Diggs and Jim came back to the line at 9:39 am for their Re-Run

F – Out across the field to the guns - back right and to the bird.

RR – Water - into cover - out - back in and he got it!

LR – Left of the tree - into the water - swam to the far shore - up the hill and right for a big loop - back down the hill and he got his bird.

Long – Into the pond - drove the hill going right of the road - slowed at the trees and was handled to this bird

64. FC-AFC SEASIDE’S GOT THAT ITCH AGAIN, “Ivy,” BLF, Craig Crook

Ivy and Craig came to the line at 9:27 am

F – Went left but came back and got her Flyer.

RR – Right of the tree and into the water - drove the hill into cover and snatched it up!

LR – Left of the tree - over the point to the shore and turned left back to the bird - got it!

Long – Into the water and drove the right side of the hill - turned left before the tree - rounded the tree and came back to the bird.



No-Bird 61. FC-AFC EXECUTION SOUTHERN STYLE - LETHAL, “Lethal,” BLM, Jason Baker

Lethal and Jason came to the line at 9:24 am and had a No-Bird, they will be back after 5 running dogs.


Pick-up 57. FC CLOONEY’S SEASIDE APOSTLE, “Creed,” BLM, Kenny Trott

Creed and Kenny came to the line at 9:15 am

F – Drove the hill - looked left and turned back right and he got his bird.

LR – Right of the young tree and through the shoreline cover - he swam to the other side - appeared to establish a hunt in the area and then took a hard left - the handler attempted to handle him back over but he got the bird.

RR(?) – Squared into the pond - but cut hard left and could not be handled – Dog was picked up.



Handle 51. FC TROUBLESOME BEWARE THE HORSE, “Trojan,” BLM, Dave Smith

Trojan and Dave came to the line at 9:01 am

F – Nice line up to the area and his bird.

RR – Up right of the trees behind the guns and up the hill - around the end of the trees and then back down to the fall area and the bird.

Long – Over the levee and up the middle - angled right across the road - back down to the long bird and he got it.

LR – Angled into the pond left of the tree - over the point and straight toward the bull rushes - drove the hill away from the bird and was handled back to this bird.



Handle 47. FC-AFC MARSHWIND’S TURBULENCE, “Evie,” BLF, Bente Kongsore

Evie and Bente came to the line at 8:45 am

F – Started the hunt wide right of the fall - got deep left behind the guns - getting into the cover for the RR mark - had to be handled to this bird.

RR – Right of the tree - into the water - around the blind - going up the hill and then headed back to the blind and then out to the bird. Got it!

LR – Left of the tree and into the pond - to the blind and moved left to the bird.

Long – Through the water and straight up the hill - at the blind she crossed the road to her bird. 



No-Bird 46. FC-AFC CROCS MINNEAPOLIS MIRACLE, “Diggs,” BLM, Jim Beck

Diggs and Jim came to the line at 8:43 am and had a No-Bird, they will be back after 5 running dogs.

Handle 44. FC-AFC DR DANY MD, “Dany,” BLF, Jake Fredericks

Dany and Jake came to the line at 8:27 am

F – A little pass left and then back to grab her bird.

RR – Nice line to the area but missed it - made a couple loops the pulled her to the left and kept jumping back into the cover - she knows it's in there somewhere! And success - she got it!

LR – Squared into the water - out across to the far shore and into the bull rushes and onto the bird.

Long – Drove the hill almost to the area when she broke down and indicated coming back down the hill - she was handled to this bird.



43. FC-AFC HIGH DESERT MORNING, “Glory,” BLF, Kenny Trott

Glory and Kenny came to the line at 8:12 am

F – Very short bird - she went straight to it!

LR – Over the levee - nice line to the area - made 2 passes and she got it.

Long – Left of the tree into the water - drove the middle of the hill and hunted right - but worked it out and got it.

RR – Out left of the tree - angled right - up through the cover - got to the top and worked her way back down to the bird.



Double Handle 41. FC-AFC PLEASANT RIVER KING EIDER, “King,” BLM, Hunter Street

King and Hunter came to the line at 7:55 am

F – Under the arc - quick turn and scooped it up

RR – Left of the small tree - through the water down the left of the cover and then into the cover - shot out towards the LR and is handled back to this bird.

LR – Over the levee to the far shore - angled left down the shore for his bird.

Long – Back over the levee - left to the LR blind -  up the hill and away from this bird - back down the hill and was handled to this bird.

6th Series Test Dogs

AFC Bayou-Star Boogie Woogie, “Boogie,” BLF

First test dog to the line was Boogle with handler Suzan Caire .... Boogie came to the line at 7:10 am

Flyer – Quick recovery of her flyer

Right Retired – Out across the water, numerous loops around the blind - she got her bird.

Left Retired – In the water - she was handled to the bull rush to get the bird.

Long – Going out right and hunted deep right behind the guns - she was handled on this mark to the bird and she was back in with her pheasant.

7:23 am She moved to the honor mat

2nd Test Dog up was Jake and handler Michelle Visel ... Jake came to the line at 7:28 am

Flyer – Very good flyer

Left Retired – Over the dam and into the pond - across the point where the gunners threw from - he worked around the edge with the bull rushes and located his bird.

Right Retired – Similar line to the flyer - he was handled when he exited the water - numerous whistles while the handler tried to maneuver him through and get a visual through the trees to the bird.

Long – Up the hill - he located the gun station - worked the area around the gunners and he was handled to the bird. (Handling with this cover will be challenging)


This test was taking the test dogs 13-16 minutes to complete

6th Series – Water Quad with and Honor

Today’s test takes place in sunny, warm conditions, with a current temperature of 57°F and a light south wind at 3 mph. The day is expected to reach the mid-80s.

The mat faces south, on a terraced hill overlooking a pond. The field features rolling hills, scattered trees, and strips of mowed cover.

Series 6: Water Quad with an Honor
Day 5 of the 2024 National Retriever Championship
Location: Fuller’s “The 70”


This quad is thrown: Long, Right Retired, Left Retired, Flyer.

Bird #1 is a hen pheasant. The gunners sit 335 yards from the mat. They throw their bird right to left over a road where it lands in a pile of thick cover. The throwers retire when the dog is sent for the flyer. We will refer to this bird as Long.

Bird #2 is a hen pheasant, thrown right to left, landing 170 yards from the mat. The bird is thrown across a mowed strip, landing in a patch of thick cover. The throwers retire when the dog is sent for the flyer. We will refer to this bird as RR for Right Retired.

Bird #3 is a hen mallard, thrown right to left landing 170 yards from the mat. This bird is thrown to the tip of a point, landing in a patch of bull rush. The throwers retire when the dog is sent for the flyer. We will refer to this bird as LR for Left Retired.

Bird #4 is a hen mallard flyer, shot left to right, landing 195 yards from the mat. We will refer to this bird as Flyer.

Once the dog picks up the final bird, the handler moves left to the honor mat.

This test is taking approximately 15 minutes to complete.







Good Morning - Day 5

Good Morning Everyone! Welcome to day 5 of the National Open. This morning we are heading into the 6th Series! We have 49 dogs still in contention.

The weather this morning is currently clear and 54 degrees, with a light 7mph wind in the Giddings area. High temps are expected to get around 85 degrees with partly cloudy skies. It's going to be a warm one! But as usual, we will update you with any changing conditions as the day goes on. 

Test dogs are running for the 6th Series now as we set up for the day – stay tuned  – we will be reporting on all of the action very soon!
